CLUB ITALIA

The Italo Australian Club in Melbourne's western suburb of Sunshine has been in existence for over 30 years and is now embarking on a fresh make over. This make over is to include a new and vibrant entry to the complex, a secondary multi-purpose flexi function space, more service facilities and an increase to the existing gaming area. Whilst there was a clear programme and functional ambition for this project, it is an opportunity for Club Italia to become a leader in the community in terms of both its facilities and its social offerings to its members.

Our proposal seeks move the entry to a more prominent location on the site, which creates a greater presentation to the primary street frontage, Furlong Road. By doing this, we expect this will attract a greater number of visitors to the Club. The term 'club' was extremely important to us throughout the design process as we wanted to inject a real sense belonging and ownership to the clubs members. We wanted to create a stable statement piece to increase the clubs physical presence (as the complex is visible from the Western Ring Road) however it was equally important that the maintain a warm, 'homey' look and feel. We wanted the members to feel at home when they were here.

To that end, we feel as though our proposal meets these objectives. The proposal is for partial demolition and a double storey addition to the existing club hours complex. Our design depicts a series of rammed earth plinths that cascade along the length of the extension. These strong vertical elements are separated by large windows that provide inter-outer connectivity and the central cavity providing the new focal point for the club.

The second level of the addition is predominantly glazed however a terrace is proposed along the top level which allows for planting to be impending and cascade over ground level. By using mainly glass on the top level, along with the sense of a heavy base, the roof seems to float above the building and becomes somewhat a subtle feature of the building. The angular timber feature soffit to the balcony is clearly visible from the lower levels and creates a sense of opulence for the members. The natural materials of rammed earth and timber are integral to creating this sense of 'home' for the Club Italia Members.
