THE ROSEHILL

he site at 47-49 Lower Plenty Road, Rosanna presents a unique opportunity to create a development that provides a range of uses and types to contribute to the local community. The heavy slope and proximity to a small activity centre and main road allows for the site to be split into two - the front of the site proposed with a child care centre and the rear of the site, seven proposed residential townhouses.

The design of the child care centre stems from a thorough investigation of form and massing on the site. The crisp white facade is intentionally monotone (white) to act as a backdrop to the intense landscaping that encompassed the common spaces of the development. The circular form provides a softer interface for adjoining neighbours and whilst allowing for greater solar amenity to common areas from within the site. The donut form evokes a playful aspect to the design which ties in well with the child care use, providing a more lively and fun environment for the children.

For the townhouses, we wanted to instil a ‘homestead’ atmosphere to ensure residents would feel a sense of home. Extensive red brickwork has been proposed to the exterior, contrasted against charcoal aluminium framing and pannelling which provide a sense of depth. As both these materials are quite ‘hard’ we are proposing to use natural timbers in pockets to soften the material asthetic. The proposed finishes generally relate to the surrounding context and in particular the residential character of the area. The colours are generally reds (brick), greys and blacks mixed in with vegetation that highlights green through the development.
