Spring St is a new two storey beach house, designed for a large family in Torquay. Our brief was to create a home that would allow for a varying degree of privacy for each of the occupants, while still providing a large area for family gathering and entertainment.

The proposed design was developed around three pavilions, connected in varying ways around a central gathering space. To the streetscape, a wide single storey form provides privacy to the site, while housing the double car garage and a formal lounge room to greet visitors. To the north, a second pavilion hides the masters retreat, complete with ensuite/WIR and a private lounge setting overlooking the pool. To the rear of the site a third form houses a rumpus room, which opens out onto a raised entertainment deck and pergola. These forms all tie around the double storey central pavilion, which houses the main living/entertainment area on ground and a private second floor with four bedrooms above.

Finished in a clean palette of charcoal render and timber, the design is intended to age gracefully with the seaside climate slowly weathering the timber. Each of the proposed volumes are separated by heavily planted courtyards, in an effort to maintain a strong connection to the outdoor environment.
